After a couple more hours of work, the IGES importer now seems to work stable. I downloaded a couple of files from GrabCAD for testing purposes and they all seem to work! The only thing that is missing is a conic curve to NURBS conversion routine, but luckily those curves were only present in a single of my test files, so they do not seem to be too common in real life data.
Next up: writing the NURBS surface tessellator. In the meantime, here are a couple more screen shots, still trim curves only:
